INSIGHTS PREVIEW
Intelligence You Can Act On
What’s next in functional ingredient trends?
66% of consumers used at least one functional nutrition product—a functional food, functional beverage, or supplement—in the prior 3 months, but only 24% used two or more.
We call this highly engaged segment “Multi-Functional Consumers.”
The 24% of consumers who are Multi-Functional Consumers aren’t simply buying more, they’re dramatically more engaged across the path to purchase:
75% more likely to than average to choose a product based on a specific type of ingredient
1.5x more likely than average to require clinically validated ingredients in their functional nutrition purchases
60% more likely to use search engines for health and nutrition research
57% more likely to look at product reviews before buying a functional nutrition product
Strategic implication: Converting single-product functional buyers into multi-category consumers is a high-value path to growth—and the data reveals exactly which ingredient types, claims, and clinical stories move them.
The full Nextin Functional Ingredients report includes consumer segmentation as well as ingredient-specific subgroups from fiber and functional mushrooms to peptide and protein trends. Plus, dynamic cross-tabulations reveal opportunities within each ingredient category.

METHODOLOGY
This Nextin Report features proprietary data from an October 2025 survey conducted by Nextin Research. The online panel comprised 1,204 U.S. adults aged 18 and older who reported shopping for and purchasing a supplement, food, or beverage in the prior month (“consumers”). Behaviors such as “purchases” are self-reported and reflect the prior 12 months unless otherwise noted.
Research design, programming, fieldwork, and analysis were conducted by Nextin Research, the syndicated research arm of strategic advisory and brand activation firm MarketPlace. Samples for these studies are sourced through Dynata, the world’s largest first-party data provider. Original sampling is balanced for gender and region according to the U.S. census. All data is reported in the aggregate except where otherwise noted.
Results reflect a balanced, non-probability sample. For directional reference, a probability sample of equivalent size would carry a margin of error of approximately ±2.8% at the 95% confidence level for the total sample (n=1,204). Differences between consumer groups are tested for significance at p ﹤ 0.05.
